The Resolution of Dualities

Duality as in “dual-reality” crafts a trickster game plan of existence, as life can be ruled by perceptions based on judgment and separation or can be crafted from the ideals of acceptance and union. Duality can obscure the inner lens from which we see through illusion. Duality-this or that, me or you, male or female, inner or outer, real or imagined-codifies opposites. These polar opposites act as bookends that hold our body of experiential knowledge rigidly in place, preventing us from easily opening the volumes of intuitive and energetic knowledge that lie waiting within.

Most us construct our reality upon dualities, but we fail to see beyond the either-or of our world to acknowledge that deep within, the energy of the opposing poles is actually a force that keeps the space-time continuum of our universe-and of our individual livesintact and whole. Rowena Pattee Kryder writes in Sacred Ground to Sacred Space, “dualities are opposite polarities of the same energetic force which occurs at the same pace to keep the universal energy in balance.” One polarity is as valid and divine as the other, for each pole plays a role in forming the whole. Each has its perfect place in the grand design. How can we know day if we do not know night? How can we know expansion if we do not know contraction? How can we savor life if we have no cognizance of death?

Credit must be given to the illusive mastery of duality and its misleading change of face. A coin has two thin sides, but spin it on its edge and it appears as a fully dimensional, flickering sphere of light. Our lives are like that. They need the energy of synthesis to move them beyond flat either-or choices. This shift from a two-dimensional to a spherical reality drives the evolution of the self. It moves us from being separate from our Source to being one with the Divine. We move from the veneer of surfaces to true dimensionality.

Think of the ocean. We focus mostly on its surface: the light shimmering and reflecting off it, the motion of the waves undulating across it, the wakes of boats moving over it. We can be mesmerized by this surface motion and mistakenly believe that this is all there is to the ocean. But the ocean runs deep, with forceful currents and abundant life beneath its surface. This is a reality we cannot know unless we risk diving in. Likewise, we cannot know the infinite possibilities of the Self unless we risk descending into our interiors, the inner ocean of being from which oneness arises.

In truth, there is no need for us to actively merge dualities, for one half of the polarity cannot exist without its polar opposite. They are already joined, married in their difference, in step as sacred counterparts. The wisdom of the stones is not about active

Integration and Oneness

Perhaps the most evident duality on our planet at this time is still that of the Masculine and Feminine. The ebb and flow of the “relationship dance,” the battle of the sexes, has been ongoing, and to what end? At no time in history have we been so free to make unions and dissolve them. Separation and divorce are the norm not the exception. We simply cannot seem to find “our other half.” We try and try, but we keep failing. Why? Because our “other half” is within us, and we must “mate” with it before we can truly be ready to join in union with someone else.

The stones counsel us that before we seek a relationship with someone else, we need to establish a “real-lationship” with ourselves, with our inner male and female aspects also known as the anima and animus in Jungian psychology. This represents the union of the conscious and unconscious parts of ourselves, a merging of our light being with our shadow self. We must touch the energy of our secret fears and our hidden desires in order to illuminate who we really are. We must plug ourselves into the holistic power source within us to be enlightened about what it means to be a full and authentic human being. We must learn to first love ourselves before we can selflessly love someone else.

When we consciously seek out all aspects of ourselves-from our potential to be grand to our capacity for darkness-and learn not to judge ourselves, then we are on the path to freedom. That freedom starts within, at the center of our being, from which there is no place else to go and nothing else to do except be right here and right now with the Self.

Earth Wisdom

As our planetary power point, Earth provides us not only with the physical resources we need to survive, but also the emotional and spiritual energy needed we need to evolve. The electrical current that runs through our root (sciatic) nerves, which begin at the base of the spine and end at the soles of our feet, connects us with the magnetic current of the earth, creating a wave of electromagnetic energy between the two poles. The most basic function of walking barefoot on the land enables us to become the grounding rod from which we plug into Earth’s grid to access its power and information. At an energetic level, we connect our DNA (our genetic information, both physically and spiritually) with Earth’s DNA, thus accessing an astounding database of knowledge. The ancients felt this earth connection intimately; they lived according to Earth’s rhythms, could read Nature’s most subtle signs and dialogued regularly with the spirit world. We are only now rediscovering this primal wisdom.

“Earthspeak” is not a lost language, and we can retrieve our memory of it by quieting our thoughts and going within. By deciphering the messages of the earth and honoring the revealed wisdom, we can expand our consciousness and heal ourselves body, mind, and spirit, and thus contribute to our planetary evolution.
